Assisted Living

Assisted Living

At some point alternative music started parodying itself/ But, for a time, alternative meant just that, another option from whatever the mouthbreathers were into; it meant underground, DIY, which, in turn, meant whatever the heck that meant. Assisted Living is a new band but they fall into that sweet spot, back when alternative was fresh. They took Chavez and Polvo, Sonic Youth and Butthole Surfers, Lilys and Hum (like old Hum), put them in a grinder, packed a very serious bowl and smoked ’em. And what you get in your earholes is a daydream of those halcyon days: tone chasers for the heads but fun for the hippies, a kinda pre-internet gauze on finding a band and falling for them deeply and forever.

Assisted Living boasts members who’ve done time in Ugh God, Nyxy Nyx, Sun Organ, Bad History Month and an iteration of Golden Apples, back when they were called Cherry. And, if you know any of those bands, you’ll know the pedigree with which we’re dealing here. There’s a Philly band slacker element that’s meant to remind everyone that Philly doesn’t give a shit, but its really good at not giving a shit.

Assisted Living is from the muddy banks of the Schyukill. Drew Saracco, Shane Moore, Jesse Kennedy & Dylan Larkin all played instruments.

PRESS

Assisted Living is a Philly slacker-rock band that’s bringing back the days of truly alternative alt-rock. Their debut album, IS COMING, dropped in October 2024, a sludgy, loose album that sounds held together with dirty shoelaces. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, or at all, really. Assisted Living makes effortless noise that’s still skillful, still artfully crafted to hit just right. There’s a slacker element, sure, but it’s not lazy. Instead, Assisted Living recalls a time when basement shows were in their prime, and maybe in Philly, they still are. Their 38 monthly listeners know what’s up, at least, but a wider audience is definitely missing out.” – VICE

“I can’t stop listening to ASSISTED LIVING, but that doesn’t mean you have to start.” – Pat Pilch

“[F Hard, B Forever] seems to open mid-thought as drums and speak-sung vocals stagger into the song before striding into its soaring, tone-particular chorus. From those disjointed opening moments alone, Assisted Living show they’ve already opened the floor for engaged innovation.” – Post Trash

Is Coming…one of the most exciting debut albums of the year.” – Sun-13

“Their sound is quite dreamy and crunchy, and its fitting for a band like this to be chasing that perfect tone – it really carries this listen!” – Andre Paras WTSR music staff
